NSWCCC SELECTIONS - GIRLS
The trials were held on Monday May 19 at Penrith Basketball Stadium which is in a central location and its’ facilities can accommodate us well.
39 players registered which is consistent with registrations in previous years.
30 players attended on the day including 1 injured player.
The start time was advertised at 9.30. However, it may possible to start earlier
eg 9.10am
The format of the day was:-
-
Introductions / Welcome
-
General warm-up – including lay ups, passing, shooting
-
Defense – Channel drill and then incorporated transition spots with full court defensive responsibilities.
-
Team concepts in offense
-
Teach offensive pattern and combine with transition drill
-
Mini Games and then Scrimmages of 5 on 5 full court.
The selection panel identified Probables and Possibles at a fairly early stage and a very strong group of 13 players emerged.
It was a difficult process to then decide on the final 10. However, it is encouraging that the talent pool is strong and there are several younger players coming through.
NSW ALL SCHOOLS SELECTIONS - GIRLS
A training session was arranged for the evening before the tournament and a team dinner followed at Panthers Club for those who could attend. This one and only session was organised around the commitments of players who are in Rep programs and the country representatives who have to travel.
Results
Game 1 CCC 83 Defeated CIS 56
It was a closely fought and low scoring first quarter. Then guards Forcadilla, Delaney and Evans took control and guided the team the rest of the game with their skills and intelligent play. Strong rebounding and quick outlet passes left the opposition without answers to the efforts of Skerritt and Tofaeono. As this is a trial to select the All Schools Team, I felt that all players contributed to the win and each player was able to show selectors their skills
Game 2 CCC 81 Defeated CHS 59
The CCC girls dominated this game. Superior athleticism, organization and skill level enabled CCC to aquire an early lead. An even greater intensity in defense was evident. Again Forcadilla and Delaney featured in the scoring together with Anestasieska and the bigs were able to dominate the paint through Skerritt, Tofaeono and Schofield. O’Hehir was able to score freely in transition and showed her aggressive, penetrating style. Our large lead enabled subs to be made freely, again to give all players opportunity to impress the selectors.
Given our limited preparation for this tournament, it is to the players credit that they were able to achieve these terrific results. To our advantage, several players have played together in various teams in recent times and those players were behind the blending of all personalities on and off the court.

NSWCCC SELECTIONS - BOYS
The 2014 NSW CCC trials attracted very strong candidates. There were 58 students who registered to attend.
The day progressed well and I was able to incorporate some team offense and team defensive principles into the session. This was valuable given our limited preparation time.
As usual a few stood out immediately but the selection of final 10 proved quite difficult.
After running through some drills to look at the basic skill level of all players, we progressed into games of 3 on 3 adressing offensive motion principles.
We then broke them into teams of 5 and played mini games. After several mini games, the ‘probables’ and ‘possibles’ were established - approximately, half the group. Further games were played until we had established our ‘Probables’ list. At approx. 2pm those not on this list were allowed to leave. As the talent pool was so high the final selection was close and difficult.
Those unsuccessful players were told they had performed well and were encouraged to return next year. Hopefully the number of younger players who attended this year will return.

Game 1: NSWCCC 63 vs NSWCIS 66
Loss to CIS by 3 points
In this game we started off very well with some strong defensive intensity and saw all players contributing offensively. We managed to be up by 6 points going into the second quarter, due to sharp shooting from Jacob Cincurak and some outstanding defence from Oliver Robilliard. However CIS switched to a Half Court Press late in the 2nd quarter, which resulted in some costly turnovers and they managed to only be two points down at halftime (32-30). Then their strong inside presence continued to dominate the rebounds with our team getting in foul trouble late in the 3rd Quarter. CIS capitalised on this opportunity and made some crucial free throws down the stretch to steal the victory in a great contest that went basket for basket. Myles Cherry was a standout offensively scoring 24 points, whilst Jacob Cincurak led the team well as captain contributing 19 points.
Game 2: NSWCCC 71 vs NSWCHS 67
Win over CHS by 4
After a tough first game, The first period was very much the same and saw both teams start well with us being down by a small margin after the first quarter. We continued to chip away at their lead in the Second Quarter with some strong rebounding from Myles Cherry around the basket to go into halftime up by 2points. CHS appeared to fatigue late in the third quarter and didn’t have the bench depth that we had and by applying a full court press in the 4th quarter we were able to steal a late victory by 4 points. The game was played in excellent spirit. Jacob Cincurak performed well again scoring 19 points to lead all scorers. Angus Glover and Oliver Robilliard played key roles on defence.
From the two games Myles Cherry, Oliver Robilliard and Jacob Cincurak proved their talents and skill pushing for selection in the NSW All Schools Team with Angus Glover being listed as a Guard reserve.
In Hindsight, with limited training compared to the other systems, we were strongly competitive and it was the second year in row that we have had 3 boys selected in the All Schools Team which is very pleasing. I would like to thank Simon Dent for his assistance and support over the course of this event as Team Manager and Assistant Coach. A big thank you must also go to NSWCCC Executive Kym Skerrit who also took on the role as Basketball Convenor this year. Fulfilling both roles is definitely no easy task and she did an outstanding job. Lastly, thank you to NSWCCC Board for allowing me to have this opportunity to be Head Coach, it is a rewarding experience to be able to coach so many talented young students in the sport of Basketball. Having been in the role for 6 years now hopefully I can mentor someone else in the role next year.
