NSWCCC DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

NSWCCC Diving took place at SOPA on Friday 29th April. This year saw 18 competitors across all age groups with particularly strong competition in the 15yrs and 17+yrs Girls springboard events.

Once again, it was great to see so many divers from previous years moving up into older age groups where they have to compete more dives. The degree of difficulty of dives has also improved with Olivia O’Rourke (17+ girls) competing a Back 2 ½ somersaults from the 3m springboard worth 2.8 and Liam Wood (Open boys platform) competing an Inward 2 ½ from the 7.5m platform worth 2.7. Divers in the younger age groups also had impressive lists with 14year olds competing dives worth more than 2.0 degrees of difficulty.

NSWCCC diving would not run without the assistance of Diving NSW officials. I would like to thank Sue Milford for refereeing and setting up the Dive Recorder program. Thanks also go to the judges; Allen Bull, Tamara Ambrose, Rebekah Mackenzie and Kevin Chavez. Kevin will be representing Australia in diving at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, so it was a special treat to have such a high-class quality athlete officiating at our competition. Finally, I congratulate Amy France from St Andrews College Marayong for once again judging in her capacity as a student official. She did a great job and progressed through to NSW All Schools as both a diver and official.

This year we farewell two of our 17+yr girls who have competed in NSWCCC diving for many years; Lucie Williams from Mackillop College and Georgia Hinds from Newman College. Both girls have demonstrated great sportsmanship and dedication to diving throughout their time as NSWCCC competitors. It was lovely to see them both finish with medals and go on to NSW All Schools with Lucie being selected in the NSW All Schools team to School Sport Australia for the first time. I encourage all divers to come back next year and keep NSWCCC diving competitive.

NSW ALL SCHOOLS DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

NSW All Schools Diving was held at SOPA on Friday 6th May. NSWCCC fielded 16 divers across most age groups and were very competitive against divers from CHS and CIS. In all, NSWCCC won 5 medals on the day; 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.

Olivia O’Rourke (St Patrick’s College, Sutherland) led the charge, winning both the 17+yrs girls springboard and platform events. This secured her a berth in the NSW team to School Sport Australia. Lucie Williams (Mackillop College) also secured a spot on the NSW team in the same events.

In the boy’s events, Liam Wood (St Pius Xth College) placed a very convincing 2nd in the 16yrs springboard event ensuring his spot on the NSW Team to School Sport Australia. Angus Grigg (Mater Dei Wagga Wagga) also placed 2nd in the 14yr boys springboard and will go on to compete at the School Sport Australia Championships.

NSWCCC final medallist of the day was James Kalogjera (St Andrews College Marayong) who placed 3rd in the 12yr boys springboard event.

Amy France from St Andrews College Marayong was our student official and judged many different events throughout the day. Her judging skills were outstanding and she was a valuable resource on the day. I encourage other divers to complete their judging exam and to officiate at future competitions.

As usual, NSW CCC divers competed to the best of their ability and with great sportsmanship. It is always a pleasure to work with these divers at each event and they are always eager to improve their skills and take advice from the coaches. I wish all the CCC divers traveling to Lightning Ridge for the School Sport Australia Championships the very best and hope they enjoy this wonderful

SATURDAY

Most of the diving team members arrived this morning from Sydney amidst the thousands of participants from sports including Swimming, Goalball, Table Tennis and Football. Although some flights were delayed, the divers made it to Adelaide Airport where they picked up their accreditation and then headed straight to the pool for their first training session.

CCC divers who made it on the first day are Nathan Calman, Olivia O’Rourke, Jodie Mennell, Jemma France, Angus and Louie Grigg. Prior to training there was a team meeting and Nathan Calman was presented with his Team Captain badge which he accepted and wears with pride. All four CCC members made the most of their first session at Adelaide Aquatic Centre, then retired to their accommodation for a much needed rest.

SUNDAY

Today was the first day of competition for our CCC divers with our rookie, Jemma France competing in the first event, the 13-14yr Girls Platform. Jemma was very nervous as this was the biggest competition she has ever been part of but she held her own, coming a respectable 14th. Nathan Calman also competed on Day 1 in the 17-19yrs 1m Springboard event. This was a highly competitive age group and Nathan gave it his all, finishing in 4th place, a mere 5 points behind 3rd.

After the competition, the divers raced to Adelaide Showground for their team photo and Opening Ceremony. By this stage, we had increased our team by 1 with the arrival of Liam Wood. The divers had a great time parading around the stadium, dancing to upbeat music and listening to the inspiring speeches by former PSG athletes.

MONDAY

Day 2 of competition saw four NSWCCC divers in action. First up was Angus Grigg on 3m in the 13yr Boys event. Angus was a cool, calm competitor, completing each dive to the best of his ability and finishing a very credible 7th. Then it was Jemma’s turn again, this time on 3m where she improved her previous result by placing 11th. Liam then competed in the 15-16yr Boys Synchronised event (paired with a diver from Canberra) where he finished 4th.

The stand out NSWCCC performance of the day came from Olivia O’Rourke and Jodie Mennell who paired up in the last event, the 15-16yr Girls Synchronised event. The girls started strong, taking the lead from their first dive and never relinquishing it. This was the first ever Gold medal at an international event for both girls and they were ecstatic with their result.

TUESDAY

Day 3 of competition saw 3 of our NSWCCC divers in action. Olivia O’Rourke and Jodie Mennell competed in the 15-16yr Girls Platform event with Olivia securing the bronze medal and Jodie placing 7th. Both girls dived outstandingly in a hotly contested age group. Liam Wood was also on platform today in the 15-16yr boys event. Liam had some big dives from the 7.5m platform and finished 10th.

Today was also “Live Streaming” day at the pool with many of our divers featured on screen throughout the morning. Team Captain and NSWCCC diver Nathan Calman was even interviewed by ex-Olympian Alex Croak. Our last team member Tyra Olsson arrived today and made use of the afternoon training session, eager to practice her dives for tomorrow’s competition.

WEDNESDAY

Day 4 saw many NSWCCC divers in action. Olivia and Tyra competed in the 16yr Girls 1m event with Olivia securing the silver medal and Tyra in 11th. Olivia was consistent throughout the competition but nailed her last dive to jump into the medals. At the same time, the 17yr boys were battling it out on 3m with Nathan matching big dive for big dive with the other NSW boys, Victorian and Macau divers. After a thrilling competition of high quality diving, Nathan placed 4th.

In the middle of the day, twins Angus and Louis Grigg competed against each other in the 13yr Boys 1m with Angus finishing 7th and Louis 9th. Finally NSWCCC divers paired with others to compete in the 13-14yr Girls Synchronised Diving Event. CCC diver Jemma France paired with fellow NSW diver Madeline Warden while CCC diver Louis Grigg paired with Qld diver Jasmin Fraser. Although the event is called 13-14yr GIRLS synchronised, boys may compete in mixed teams if they are synchronising with girls in that age group. In diving, when it comes to mixed gender teams, you compete in the age group of the older diver regardless of gender. Having explained that complex rule, Jemma and Maddie finished 15th while Louis and Jasmin finished 19th.

NSWCCC divers are having a great time at PSG. They make the most of training time and are often the last divers in the pool during afternoon training. They are all making new friends and learning new skills. Tomorrow, they’re looking forward to the NSW Diving Team get together after another exciting day at the pool.

THURSDAY

First event at diving today was the 15yr Girls Springboard event. NSWCCC had one competitor in this event, Jodie Mennell. Jodie is very new to diving, having switched from gymnastics in the past 2 years. She was highly competitive in the first few rounds and going into the last round was equal first. After a brilliant final dive, Jodie secured the gold medal, edging out second place by a few points. This is a fantastic achievement for Jodie.

Event 5 today was the 14yr Girls 1m where Jemma France placed 15th. Today was also the final individual event for our captain Nathan Calman who competed platform. Nathan did some great dives off the 5m, 7.5m and 10m platforms to gain 4th place amongst a tough, international field. To finish the day for NSWCCC, we had Angus Grigg pair with his younger brother Edouard in the 13-14yr Boys Synchronised event where they placed 6th.

NSWCCC DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Diving competition was held at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Tuesday 29th April. 35 students from 12 Catholic Schools across NSW competed in the Springboard Events while 8 students (the largest number to date) competed in the Open Platform Event.

Once again, the standard of diving at NSWCCC has improved greatly with divers competing dives with a higher degree of difficulty and diving from higher board heights. In the Open Platform, Nathan Calman from St Gregory’s College, Campbeltown performed dives from the 10m Platform while several divers performed their platform dives from the 7.5m platform. The highest degree of difficulty dive performed in the competition was also from Nathan who competed an Inward 2½ somersaults from the 7.5m platform worth 2.7 in degree.

This year we farewell 2 more divers who have competed at NSWCCC for most of their high school lives. Ellen Martin from Cerdon College and Sarah Boyle from Santa Sabina dived for the last time at this year’s event. NSWCCC thanks you for your continued commitment to diving and wishes you all the best as you complete your HSC.

NSWCCC diving would not run without the Diving NSW officials who judge the divers each year. Thank you to Allen Bull, Norma Holland, Stan Pendall, Vyninka Arlow and Charlotte Moore who officiated on the day. Special thanks to Stuart Guthrie from OLMC for helping out on the table and running the CGSSSA competition, Nathan Weaver from St Andrews College for managing the divers and working on the table and Sue Milford from School Sport Australia for refereeing.

Please find a complete list of results on the website. The first 3 place getters in each event went on to represent NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools competition while all platform divers progressed to their Age Group Platform event at All Schools. Well done to all divers and I hope to see you next year.

NSW ALL SCHOOLS DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The NSW All Schools Diving Championships took place on Monday 5th May at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. NSWCCC sent a team of 23 divers to compete in both the Springboard and Platform Events. It was again a long day beginning with warm up at 7.30am and concluding at 4pm. On the day, all divers competed to the best of their ability and conducted themselves in a manner befitting the Catholic values espoused by their schools.

This year saw NSWCCC divers become more competitive with those from CHS and CIS. There were several podium finishes and School Sport Australia (SSA) berths, some in multiple events. Millie Marks from Bethlehem College placed 2nd in the 13yr Girls Springboard and 3rd in the 12-14yr Girls Platform Event. Nathan Calman from St Gregory’s College, Campbeltown placed 1st in the 16yrs Boys Springboard Event and 2nd in the 15-16yr Boys Platform. Both Millie and Nathan will compete in Springboard and Platform at SSA in July. Liam Wood from St Piux Xth placed 2nd in the 14yr Boys Springboard and will compete in that event at SSA.

CCC divers to watch in the future include Lucy Tooney from Xavier High School Albury who narrowly missed 3rd place in her 14 yr Springboard Event by less than 1 point. Amy France and Tyra Olsson from St Andrews College also stepped up this year placing 4th and 5th respectively in the 15-16yr Girls Platform.

We are very proud of our NSWCCC divers who competed at NSW All Schools, in particular the regional divers who, due to pool closures, had limited practice time in the lead up to the event. We encourage all NSWCCC divers to continue to improve their dives and come back next year with a renewed enthusiasm and competitive spirit.

Well done!
